Pope Julius II
At birth he was named Giuliano della Rovere, in 1443, in Liguria, Italy. He was born into a poor but noble family. His name was Giuliano but he took the name of Julius after the Pope 4th ahead of him. In 1471, he was created Cardinal Priest of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. Thereafter, he received many benefits and a sizeable income.
In 1506 the Swiss Guard was formed, in order to provide a constant protection of soldiers to the Pope. Given these political struggles during Julius's papacy, it is no surprise that he was their founder.
